Batman work in progress story outline
Intro
This takes place in the Batman Beyond animated universe,
where its 40 years in the future and a retired Bruce Wayne mentors a young
Terry McGinnis as he takes on the mantle of Batman. With futuristic tech and a suit full of sleek
gadgets, Terry fights all new enemies in his own way while trying to keep up
with high school and his girlfriend.
Premise:
Old man Wayne is kidnapped, and only the world’s greatest
detective is capable enough to track him down. Thanks to the magic of time
travel, Terry teams up with the original Batman as they travel through Gotham
City and uncover the fate of the old Arkham Asylum. But can Batman come to terms with the fact that
Gotham will always need a caped crusader?
Act I
The comic begins in present day Gotham as Batman and Nightwing
chase a disguised Clayface through a crowd of mobsters. After the ensuing chaos is over, Nightwing
asks Batman if he thinks that they’ll have to be fighting off monsters and supervillains
the rest of their lives, but Batman insists that Gotham City can change. However, after admitting that nothing is
forever, Batman disappears in a flash of light.
Meanwhile in Neo Gotham, Terry is tasked with infiltrating a
weapons facility and covertly stealing/wiping crucial data. He manages to reach the data center with the
support of old man Wayne. Suddenly, Terry’s communicator goes to loud static,
and he’s caught red handed by heavily armed guards. Terry barely escapes alive,
and trudges back to the batcave, only to find Wayne is nowhere to be found.
After days with no leads, Terry and and Commissioner Barbara
Gordon go to what remains of the Justice League for help. Green
Lantern Kai Ro is unable to locate Wayne using his abilities, but decides to
recruit the one detective who can. He is
able to fish out the original Batman from the past and have him temporarily
assist Terry in his search.
Act II
Terry and Batman search the batcave for clues. Due to the
lack of signs of a struggle, Batman concludes that Wayne wanted to be captured,
and that there might be a larger plot involved.
They proceed to question a gang of Jokerz, and find out that a talented
upstart has been stirring up trouble by using tricks from old villains. The untimely
duo continue to search the city for clues, all the while Batman becoming more
and more frustrated at what Gotham has become.
Batman then finds a clue that Wayne left behind, stating
that he’s gone back to his true home.
The caped crusader proceeds to question Barbara about the fate of the
old Arkham Asylum. After learning of its
explosive demise, the pair of batmen travel to the ruins of the psychiatric estate. They search the old facilities and find an
underground bunker with all kinds of hybrid weapons, combing old rogue gallery
tricks with futuristic tech.
Terry and Batman locate Wayne, only to be attacked by a lone
villain. The self-proclaimed Neo Joker
readies his arsenal and begins to battle both batmen.
Act II
Batman and Terry try to fight off the Neo Joker as they clash
throughout the underground facility. The
place is riddled with traps and weapons the villain uses to keep the heroes on
their toes. They combat old Scarecrow fear gas and giant freeze rays alongside
lasers and blasters. Batman becomes
overwhelmed by the barrage of attacks, and is distraught that all of these old
villain tricks somehow survived all of his apparent efforts of riding Gotham of
them for good.
Wayne, trapped away from the struggle, proceeds to give
Terry and Batman radio support, and reminds them of how to counter all the old
tricks. Once they are able to get back
on their feet, they disable all of Neo Joker’s weapons and traps, leaving him
seemingly cornered. With one last
effort, he uses Bane steroid venom with his animal spliced genes to become a gigantic
horned monster. He rampages through the
facility, destroying the cage where Wayne is kept and nearly bringing the place
down.
As Batman and Terry struggle with the massive maniac to no
avail, Wayne starts to yell out at the giant, accusing him of being nothing but
a cheap imitator and nowhere near as capable as the Joker. While that grabs the monster’s attention,
Wayne calls out to Batman and they manage work together and trap him under rubble
once and for all. After escaping from
the mess and arresting the villain, Wayne proceeds to thank Batman for his
help. Batman asks if it’s all worth it
at the end, and Wayne reminds him that the world will always need a
Batman. Impressed by Terry’s ability to
keep up with him, Batman decides that maybe Gotham needing a Dark Knight is all
right after all. He is sent back to the
present day to a distraught Nightwing, and they proceed to continue on patrol,
having faith that Gotham will always have someone watching over.
